Getting Started with Nature Homeschooling

If you've landed here feeling a bit unsure โ€” am I qualified? are we doing enough? where do I even begin? โ€” take a breath. You're in exactly the right place, and you already have what it takes.

Nature-led homeschooling simply means letting the real world โ€” your garden, the weather, the bush at the end of the street, the seasons โ€” be the teacher, while you make sure the reading, writing and maths come along for the ride. You do not need to be outdoorsy, sporty, crafty or a scientist. You need a little curiosity and a willingness to get your shoes muddy. That's genuinely it.

๐Ÿ’š Wherever you're starting from, this works. New to homeschooling or years in. Full-time, or after school and on weekends. A balcony or ten acres. A tight budget or a comfortable one. Read on โ€” and take only what fits your family right now.


Why it works (for any family)

  • Attention & wellbeing. Time outside lowers stress and lifts focus โ€” the learning that follows simply sticks better.
  • Everything connects. One tomato plant is biology, maths, writing, history, art and lunch. Nature refuses to stay in subject boxes โ€” and that's exactly how young brains like it.
  • Real stakes. A seedling that wilts if it isn't watered teaches responsibility no worksheet can.
  • It meets each child where they are. The same walk teaches a five-year-old and a twelve-year-old completely different things, at the same time.

Start this week (you already have what you need)

Pick one. Don't do all four โ€” momentum beats ambition.

  1. Go outside for 20 minutes a day. Same spot is even better โ€” it becomes a "sit spot" your kids learn to read across the seasons.
  2. Start a nature journal. One blank book per child. Draw one thing, write one sentence. See Nature journaling with kids.
  3. Grow one thing. A pot of lettuce or a sprouting jar โ€” food, science and patience in one move.
  4. Follow the questions. When a child asks "why?", that's your lesson. Look it up together.

"But I'm worried aboutโ€ฆ"

  • "I'm not a nature expert." Perfect โ€” model being a learner. "Let's find out" is the most powerful sentence in homeschooling.
  • "I have no idea if we're doing enough." Keep the nature journal. Over a term it quietly becomes proof of real, broad learning.
  • "We live in a flat / in the city." A balcony, a park and a worm bin are plenty. Nature is everywhere once you start looking.
  • "We both work / time is tight." Twenty minutes counts. So does the weekend. Consistency matters far more than hours.
  • "Money is tight." Almost everything here is free or close to it โ€” a $5 notebook and a packet of seeds will carry you a long way.
  • "What about the curriculum and registration?" Nature learning maps neatly onto the Australian Curriculum. Keep the journal as your evidence and jot a weekly record.

Already homeschooling? This still has plenty for you

If you're experienced and just looking for fresh life, use nature as a spine: hang your existing maths and reading off a seasonal theme, lean on the outdoors for science and writing prompts, and let the older kids take real responsibility (running the compost, leading a younger sibling, keeping the weather data).

A rhythm beats a timetable

Young families thrive on rhythm โ€” a predictable shape to the week โ€” far more than a rigid clock. Outdoors in the morning, a hands-on skill, a read-aloud, a journal entry, repeat. That gentle repetition lowers everyone's stress, and it's the backbone our whole program is built on.

A sample day (keep it gentle)

There's no need to recreate a classroom. A relaxed nature-led day might look like:

  • Morning: outside while everyone's fresh โ€” a walk, the garden, the "sit spot," or tending an animal. Bring the journal.
  • Late morning: the formal-ish bit โ€” some reading and maths, kept short and focused. Little and often beats long and weary.
  • Afternoon: a hands-on skill or project (cooking, a build, a craft), free play, and a read-aloud. Follow the day's curiosity wherever it leads.

Two good hours of engaged learning at home often covers more than a full school day โ€” there's no lining up, no waiting for thirty other kids.

Your first month

  • Week 1: just get outside daily and start the journals. Notice, don't teach.
  • Week 2: add one "grow something" project โ€” a pot of seeds or a sprouting jar.
  • Week 3: follow one big question the kids raise, all the way to an answer.
  • Week 4: look back through the journals together. You'll be amazed how much learning happened without a worksheet in sight.

A word on "deschooling"

If your child has come out of a classroom, expect an adjustment period โ€” for both of you. It's normal to feel the urge to recreate school at the kitchen table. Resist it for a few weeks. Let curiosity reawaken, build the outdoor habit, and trust that real learning is happening even when it doesn't look like "school." It will.
