How to Use The Nature-Led Year

Welcome. Think of this as your teaching manual. It takes you from "I just bought it" to confidently teaching outside โ€” even if you've never taught a thing in your life.

However you came to this โ€” first-time homeschooler or seasoned hand, full-time or after-school, balcony or paddock โ€” you can run this program. It assumes no experience and no special skills. If you can read it aloud and step outside, you can teach it. Don't aim for perfect; aim for started.

๐Ÿงญ New and overwhelmed? Do only this: read sections 1โ€“3, set up a nature journal, and teach the first week's Core Day. Come back for the rest once you've got one week under your belt. Momentum first, mastery later.


1. The anatomy of a week

Every week is built from the same eight parts. You don't have to do them in order, or all in one day โ€” they're ingredients, not a timetable. Here's what each one is for and roughly how long it takes:

After a week or two your kids will know this shape, which means less negotiation and more learning.

2. How to read a weekly plan

Each week opens with a theme and a Big Question, then lists the eight parts above with a short prompt for each. Many also include:

  • Little Hands / Bigger Hands notes โ€” the same activity, pitched for younger (Fโ€“Y2) and older (Y3โ€“Y6) kids.
  • ๐Ÿ”— Go deeper links โ€” free Kids By Nature articles that expand a skill.
  • โš ๏ธ Safety notes โ€” read these before you start.

You'll also see, on each week, a quick instructional block:

  • โ–ธ Do this โ€” the concrete steps to actually run the activity.
  • ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Talk about it โ€” a discussion question to deepen thinking.
  • ๐Ÿ”ง Adapt it โ€” how to make it simpler or stretch it further.

3. Your 15-minute Sunday prep

Do this once a week and you'll never feel caught out:

  1. Read the week through once (3 min). Picture how it'll go.
  2. Check the materials for the week against Materials & supplies and gather or order anything missing (5 min).
  3. Pick your days โ€” decide which part happens when, or commit to the Core Day (3 min).
  4. Set the hook โ€” write the Big Question on a whiteboard, mirror or scrap of paper where the kids will see it (2 min).
  5. Glance at the weather and flip the outdoor day if rain's coming (2 min).

That's it. The planning is done โ€” the rest is just showing up.

4. How to run each part (with words you can borrow)

You don't need a script, but here's how each part tends to flow, with example language for when you're not sure what to say.

  • ๐ŸŒ Big Question. Ask it, then stop talking. Let them guess, wonder, and be wrong. "No wrong answers yet โ€” what do you reckon?" Jot their first ideas; you'll revisit them at week's end.
  • ๐Ÿฅพ Outdoor exploration. Go to the same spot when you can. Model noticing out loud: "Huh โ€” that wasn't flowering last week." Bring the journal. Resist explaining everything; let them find it.
  • ๐Ÿช“ Homestead skill. Demonstrate once, slowly, then hand it over. Let them do the real thing (with supervision for tools, heat and animals). Messy and imperfect is fine โ€” the doing is the lesson.
  • ๐Ÿ“– Literacy. Read aloud together, then write a little. For reluctant writers, let them dictate while you scribe, or draw-then-label.
  • ๐Ÿ”ข Numeracy. Use the real objects from the week โ€” weigh the harvest, count the seeds, graph the temperatures. Maths that solves a real problem sticks.
  • ๐Ÿ”ฌ Science. Always predict first ("What do you think will happen?"), then test, then compare. The gap between prediction and result is where learning lives.
  • ๐ŸŽจ Make-it. Keep it about the response, not the perfection. Pop the result on the nature table.
  • โœ… Curriculum codes. You don't teach these โ€” you just tick what you covered in your weekly record (section 11).

5. A worked week, day by day

Here's how one real week โ€” Term 1, Week 2: "The Summer Harvest" โ€” might actually run across a relaxed week. Use it as a template for reading any week.

  • Monday โ€” wonder & look. Over breakfast, ask the Big Question ("What's ripe right now, and how do we know?"). Head out for the harvest walk โ€” pick, or visit a market. Each child draws one fruit or veg in the journal. (~1 hr)
  • Tuesday โ€” hands & numbers. Wash and sort the harvest (homestead skill). Weigh it, tally the types, sort by size (numeracy). (~1 hr)
  • Wednesday โ€” read & write. Read a picture book or article about food and growing; each child writes where their fruit grew and what it needs (literacy). (~40 min)
  • Thursday โ€” investigate. Cut a fruit open, find and count the seeds, talk about why the seeds are there (science). Predict first! (~40 min)
  • Friday โ€” make & share. Fruit/veg stamp painting (make-it), then look back at Monday's guesses. Tick the week's codes in your record. (~45 min)

The Core Day version (one focused day): Big Question โ†’ harvest walk โ†’ wash and weigh the harvest โ†’ one journal entry. That single rich morning covers the heart of the week.

6. Teaching multiple ages at once

Teach the theme together, then split by level:

  • ๐Ÿคš Little Hands (Fโ€“Y2): shorter, more sensory, more drawing and dictating.
  • โœ‹ Bigger Hands (Y3โ€“Y6): more writing, measuring, research and responsibility.

Older kids reading to younger ones, or leading an activity, counts as learning โ€” and it's good for both. Mixed ages are an advantage here, not a problem.

7. The Core Day path (when time is short)

Working week? Co-op day? Just tired? Run the Core Day: Big Question โ†’ Outdoor โ†’ Homestead skill โ†’ one nature-journal entry. It covers the essentials of every week in roughly a day, and it's perfect for after-school and weekend families. Do the extra parts when you can; skip them guilt-free when you can't.

8. Adapting up and down

  • Too hard / too much? Drop the writing to dictation, shorten the outdoor time, do the activity with them rather than handing it over, and keep the Core Day only.
  • Too easy / hungry for more? Use the Bigger Hands notes, add a research question, ask them to teach it to a sibling, or turn an observation into a multi-week investigation (e.g. track one tree all year).
  • Special interests & needs. Lean into what lights your child up โ€” a bug-obsessed kid can run the whole year through minibeasts. Movement breaks, shorter blocks and lots of outdoors suit many kids beautifully.

9. When it goes sideways

  • "They're not interested." Change the place, not the plan. Outside, a new spot, or following their tangent usually rekindles it.
  • It rained / life happened. Flip the days, or use a rainy "catch-up & wonder" week (there's slack built into every term). You can't fall "behind" โ€” the seasons set the pace, not a clock.
  • A lesson flopped. Normal. Note what didn't work and move on. Some weeks soar, some fizzle.
  • You feel behind. You're not. Cover the Core Day, keep the journal going, and trust the rhythm. Consistency beats completeness.

10. Watching for learning (without tests)

You don't need quizzes to know learning is happening. Watch for:

  • New words turning up in their talk and play.
  • Better questions โ€” the surest sign of a thinking child.
  • Transfer โ€” noticing the same idea somewhere new ("look, that's decomposing too!").
  • The journal filling with more detail, accuracy and curiosity over time.

Jot a sentence or two each week (next section). Over a term, those notes become a clear, honest picture of growth.

11. Registration & record-keeping

Homeschool registration rules differ across Australian states and territories, and most regulators want evidence of learning rather than test scores.

This planner helps you evidence learning in three ways:

  • Curriculum codes are listed on every week, so you can show coverage against the Australian Curriculum v9.
  • The nature journal is a natural learning portfolio (dated, in the child's own hand).
  • A weekly record template (below) lets you jot what was actually done.

12. Setting up your spaces

Three simple "stations" make the year run smoothly:

  1. The nature table โ€” a shelf or tray where finds (feathers, seed pods, shells, bones) live and rotate with the seasons. It keeps the season visible indoors and gives the Make-it projects a home.
  2. The nature journal โ€” one blank-page book per child. This is the spine of the whole program; see Nature journaling with kids.
  3. The grow spot โ€” your sunniest patch, pot or windowsill, where the gardening weeks happen.

13. You don't need a farm

Wherever a homestead skill assumes space, there's a balcony / courtyard / windowsill version. A pot, a worm bin and a window are genuinely enough to start. Apartment learning is real learning.

14. The free hub is part of the course

Throughout the planner you'll see links to free Kids By Nature articles. They go deeper on a single skill (how to start a worm farm, how to read the weather, how to dye with onion skins). Treat them as the "extra reading" shelf for the program.
